Learning a modern foreign language helps all students develop their interest and curiosity in the similarities and differences between themselves and others. This includes learning about countries, cultures, people and communities. Meeting people from other countries and cultures helps to broaden students’ horizons by experiencing new and different languages and cultures. Learning the basics of a foreign language helps students to extend and develop their language and communication skills and can enhance self-esteem.

The National Curriculum states that “Teaching may be of any modern foreign language”. At Meadowside, the Modern Foreign Language taught is French with the opportunity to join a Spanish lunchtime club once a week.

“Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.”
